Highlights

While controversy rages, one must remember no Indian university gets into the top 200 in global rankings. This pathetic performance has prompted the Centre to introduce Institution of Eminence in India. Out of the 11 applications the empowered experts' committee received, Jio Institute alone satisfied all the four parameters of selection and was, hence, recommended for issuing a Letter of intent for setting up an Institute of Eminence: Availability of land for construction of the institution; putting in place a core team with very high qualification and wide experience; making available funding for setting up the institution, and a strategic vision plan with clear annual milestones and action plan

Before you outrage, read how it happened.

  1. The University Grants Commission released a notice for setting up of Institution of Eminence (IoE) on September 2017.
  2. Applications were invited from both public and private entities for IoE under Greenfield and Brownfield categories.
  3. The Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) set up the following parameters for accreditation:
    1. Availability of land for building the institution
    2. Putting in place a core team with very high qualification and extensive experience
    3. Making funding available
    4. A strategic vision plan with clear annual milestones and action plan
  4. Eleven applications were received for IoE status under greenfield category. Out of the 11, Jio Institute alone met all the four prerequisites.
  5. In the government category, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore received the IoE status.
  6. Unlike Jio, the government institutes will get extra funding of Rs 1,000 crore. Jio gets nothing other than autonomy.
  7. In the private Brownfield category, BITS Pilani, Manipal Academy of Higher Education got IoE status, besides greater autonomy.
