New Delhi: Alok Verma, who had joined back as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director only a few days back after a forced leave of 77 days, has been sacked from his post by the Narendra Modi government. Nageshwar Rao has been appointed as the interim chief.
The Union government had on October 23 sent him and his deputy Rakesh Asthana on leave. Verma has been removed by a selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to sources, a race has started for the post of the new CBI director. Sources also confirmed that Justice AK Sikri and PM Modi were in favour of removing Verma, while Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge opposed the decision.

The decision has been taken on the basis of the CVC report which was presented in the Supreme Court. The court termed some allegations of the report against Verma as "very uncomplimentary".

On Friday, the Delhi high court will also pronounce its judgment on the plea of Asthana over the quashing of the FIR filed against him.
Verma on Wednesday had reversed 11 transfers. He also issued orders for the transfer of five officers on Thursday, just a few hours before he was removed.
