Kannur: A Thalassery POCSO court sentenced Catholic priest Robin Vadakkumchery to 20 years rigorous imprisonment for raping and impregnating a minor girl.  A fine of Rs 3 lakh was also levied on him. Thalassery court judge PN Vinod pronounced the verdict on Saturday

The priest has been sent to 60 years of rigorous imprisonment over three charges including rape and abuse of minor girls. He can serve all the three sentences together. The court acquitted the other six accused in the case as the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them.

The court also instructed the police to take action against the father and mother of the girl for giving wrong witness accounts. The parents had turned hostile witnesses. At one point of time even her father came out to own up the crime while mother tried to establish that the girl was not a minor when she was sexually abused.
