Kerala floods: The amount needed for these celebrations in the State will be donated to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund

The State government has decided to cancel all official celebrations this year due to Kerala floods. State youth festival, International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), Nehru Trophy boat race and several other cultural programmes related to tourism have been cancelled. The Kerala government issued the order on Tuesday. The amount needed for these celebrations in the State will be donated to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.

Meanwhile, many ministers are not happy with the decision, claiming that it was not taken in consultation with them. The order became controversial as certain ministers covertly and overtly started attacking the decision.

Meanwhile, State Minister AK Balan has written to the chief secretary, asking him to review the decision to cancel IFFK.

Chalachitra Academy chairman, Kamal, said the decision was taken without consulting the academy. He has reluctantly stopped every preparation for the international film festival.

Kamal spoke to AK Balan, who reportedly said that if the chief minister had directed, then the film festival should not be done.  The minister also said to Kamal that it would be difficult to withdraw the decision.

Kamal said that they would try to conduct IFFK by using a fraction of the fund. He also said that banning IFFK for one year will amount to a big loss. The State government will take the final decision.
