While Muharram is observed as a day of mourning for several Muslims across the world, the residents of Rona in Gadag, Karnataka have added a different dimension to it. Both Hindus and Muslims celebrate all festivals together in Rona and on Friday they joined to observe Muharram. In fact, the day was observed here by hoisting the tricolour instead of the Islamic one. Nine lingams were offered by the Annadaneshwara Mutt to the Muharram procession. The region is known for a strong Hindu-Muslim bonding and have shown their unity during Muharram. The deity is taken out in a procession from the mosque to the mutt where it receives blessings from the Swamiji. The name of the deity is “Muhammad Alif” and is called “the sword god”. The deity is later put up for bidding by people.
