Bengal was shaken by political violence again on Monday as TMC and BJP cadres clashed in the Purulia district. The two groups fired and threw crude bombs at each other, and the violence led to the death of two BJP workers.

Purulia has become the epicentre of rivalry between the two parties ever since the BJP had made considerable inroads in the last panchayat elections. The violence on Monday occurred around the formation of panchayat boards, the control of which would have determined the control of the area.

A BJP worker identified as Niranjan Gope was killed in the violence, and according to latest reports, another BJP worker succumbed to his injuries.

The BJP alleged that the police were complicit in the violence. It is the fourth death of a BJP worker in the state in three months after Trilochan Mahato and Dulal Kumar were found hanging in May and June respectively.
