Kamegowda might be an 80-year-old, but his contribution to the district which always has water scarcity is immense. He has constructed 14 check dams single-handedly. In addition, he has planted and watered thousands of saplings, which have today grown into large trees, helping the place to hold the sand and get rainfall. He has even put bunds around the dams so to prevent any accidents near the water body. He has been honoured with Basavashree award. Now, one of the check dams has been named of Kamegowda. Interestingly he has named some of the dams after his grandchildren. The specialty of these dams is that the water bodies have water even when the famous Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam goes dry. He is known as Mandya's “lake man”, but sadly has not been recognised by the State government. Watch Karnataka's octogenarian Manjhi in action in this video.
