Ballari: A video shows three men destroying a pillar at the Hampi world heritage site in Karnataka. The video has gone viral on social media. There was outrage on social media over the men and they urged the Karnataka government to begin a probe. Recently, the New York Times had ranked Hampi at second place in “52 places to go in 2019”.

Ballari superintendent of police Arun Rangarajan on Saturday visited the spot and said an investigation has begun.

In a tweet, Karnataka water resources minister DK Shivakumar said, "Have instructed authorities to take strict action against those involved in desecration of Hampi's historical structure. Our cultural heritage is important & has to be preserved."

Hampi is known for its archaeological monuments from the 14th-16th century, and it was the last capital of the Vijayanagar empire.
