Traya co founder Saloni Anand has compressed her company's research into a single sentence for Hair Loss Awareness Month: hair loss is an internal health condition with an external symptom. The sentence is short; its implications rearrange the way India shops for, talks about and lives with hair loss.
"Over 200 million Indians deal with hair loss. The majority reach for something to put on their hair. Our data across 5 lakh men shows the problem is almost always inside: stress in 60%, gut issues in 37%, sleep disruption in 30%, and nutritional deficiency driving inflammation in 65%. Hair loss is an internal health condition with an external symptom. Treating only what's visible is why most solutions fail." said Saloni Anand, Co Founder, Traya.
Each clause carries data. Internal: in Traya's study across 5 lakh Indian men, 60% of men with hair loss reported high stress, 37% had gut issues affecting nutrient absorption, 30% reported sleep disruption, and 65% showed nutritional deficiency driving inflammation. External symptom: the thinning itself, the only part of the condition the sufferer, and the market, ever addresses.
The broader Hair Test Report shows how widely the internal conditions run. Across 4,89,721 men in 20 states and 50 cities, more than half report stress and nearly a third report sleep problems, with the load heaviest in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and lightest in Rajasthan, Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir. The internal weather Anand describes is not exceptional; in much of urban India it is the forecast.
Believed fully, the sentence changes the first question a man asks. Instead of what should I put on this, the question becomes what is this telling me. It moves hair loss from the aisle where it has always been shelved, adjacent to grooming, into the aisle where Anand argues it belongs, adjacent to health. It also explains the category's defining paradox, enormous spending and minimal satisfaction, without blaming the customer: if, as Anand argues, the condition is internal, external care alone may leave the accompanying factors entirely unexamined.
It changes the emotional register too. A grooming failure invites embarrassment; a health signal invites attention. For a subject 200 million Indians currently manage through silence and jokes, that reframing may be the most valuable thing Hair Loss Awareness Month can distribute this August, and it fits in a sentence.
