Gujarat Among India's Most Relaxed States, Finds Traya Hair Test Report

The state that works famously hard also rests unusually well. According to the Traya Hair Test Report, an analysis of 4,89,721 hair test responses from men across 20 states and 50 cities, Gujarat ranks among the most relaxed states in India, with just 6.9% of its men reporting high stress against a national average of 7.7%, and only 19.8% reporting disturbed sleep against a national 22.1%.

Nearly three quarters of Gujarat's men, 73.3%, describe their sleep as outright peaceful, comfortably above the national average of 70.6% and behind only the Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh belt at the top of the national table. Roughly half the state's men report little to no stress at all.

Gujarat in the Traya data

The finding rests on 23,993 responses from across the state, one of the larger samples in the report, and it is notable for what Gujarat is not: a slow economy. The states that share the top of the stress tables, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, are precisely the fast industrialising ones, which makes Gujarat's combination of commercial intensity and reported calm the exception worth studying.

The regional contrast is sharp. Combined high and moderate stress in Gujarat touches 50.7% of men, against 64.3% in Tamil Nadu and nearly 65% in Andhra Pradesh. On disturbed sleep, Gujarat's 19.8% sits eleven points clear of Tamil Nadu's 30.4%. Whatever the southern boomtown economies are extracting from their men, Gujarat's economy appears to be extracting less.

The possible whys

The report assigns no causes, but the speculation writes itself: an entrepreneurial culture where men work for themselves rather than for distant shift rosters, evenings anchored by family and community, a food and social rhythm that winds the day down early, and an economy whose intensity is spread across towns rather than concentrated in two or three overheated metros.

Whichever explanation holds, the data hands Gujarat a distinction its business rankings never capture: the state has apparently found a way to grow without spending its men's sleep to pay for it. In a dataset where prosperity and rest pull against each other almost everywhere, Gujarat is the reconciliation.
