Uttar Pradesh police have already registered a case of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation against Atul Rai after a college student alleged she was raped by the mahagathbandhan candidate

New Delhi: The mahagathbandhan candidate from Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh is an alleged rapist. Atul Rai, the BSP nominee from the constituency, has reportedly gone missing since May 1 when an FIR was lodged by a college student accusing him of sexual assault.

However, that did not stop Mayawati from defending him. Now, even the Supreme Court has refused to entertain a plea seeking a stay on his arrest.

Mayawati bats for rape accused Rai

Mayawati, the BSP supremo chose to back her candidate even before the investigations began. She called Rai "victim of a conspiracy by the BJP". In fact, in a recently held rally, Mayawati told her supporters, "We are campaigning for him and the people of Ghosi know that he is being framed. He may be arrested if he comes here for campaigning". Hitting back hard at the conspiracy theory floated by the BSP leader, PM Modi recently said in a rally in Mau, “But Behenji, [Mayawati] will you seek votes for such candidates?”

What's the case all about?

Uttar Pradesh police have already registered a case of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation against Rai after a college student alleged she was raped by the mahagathbandhan candidate. The complainant said Rai took the victim home to meet his wife and assaulted her. But rather than facing the law, the BSP candidate went missing soon after the complaint was registered against him at a Varanasi police station.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a search operation to nab Rai who is currently absconding and his counsel insists it’s a "politically motivated" case.

As Rai is on the run after being accused of a serious charge, airports are reportedly being put on high alter, lest he attempts to leave the country.
