Purulia: The police resorted lathi-charge on BJP supporters who allegedly smeared colour (abir) on police personnel deployed on duty in Balrampur, Purulia on Tuesday.

Few BJP supporters have been injured in the incident. The victims have been rushed to the Purulia Sadar Hospital. According to reports, two of them have sustained severe blows.

If reports are to be believed, the BJP took out a victory rally in Fatehpur village under Balrampur police station to celebrate their win in the recent general elections. BJP leader claimed that Trinamool, in order to create disturbance in the victory rally, were standing with sticks at different points.

The police deployed in the victory rally for law and order duty were informed about the threat. The BJP also claimed that the saffron colour got accidentally smeared on some police personnel as they entered the rally.

Following this incident, the police started lathi-charge on the BJP supporters.

However, the police have denied the allegation regarding the lathi-charge.

Akash Magharia SP Purulia said, “The victory rally was organised without our permission. The revellers smeared saffron colour on the cops, following which they retaliated with minor force.”

BJP has also not made any formal complaint against the police. Tension still prevails in the area.
