New Delhi: The government has decided to accelerate the integration of the BrahMos missile, a supersonic cruise missile on more than 40 Sukhoi fighter jets, reports stated on Sunday. The move aims to reinforce the combat capability of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The project is scheduled to be completed under the direction of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and BrahMos Aerospace Limited in a fast-track procedure by the end of 2020.The strategic project was decided in the year 2016. However, the actual work commenced by the end of 2017 and was slow paced.
The composition of the Rafale, S-400 air defence missile system as well the integrated mechanism of the Sukhoi and BrahMos missile in the IAF is expected to provide substantial strength against the Pakistani Air Force (PAF).
This decision of integrating the missiles with the jets was announced post the Balakot airstrike.
Sukhoi is a fighter aircraft manufactured for Indian specifications and has the ability to fly at a top speed of 2120 km/hr. BrahMos, an India Russia joint venture’s missile has a range of 290 km and can travel at Mach 2.8, thrice the speed of sound.
A fleet of 40 Sukhoi jet is undergoing structural modifications at the aerospace major HAL for the integration of the missile on them.
