World Cup 2019: Virat Kohli's school sends soil to 'bless' captain; Twitterati poke fun at TV channel

Twitter users were confused as a school where Virat Kohli studied sent soil to the Indian captain to "bless" him at the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales

New Delhi: Indian fans were bemused after a Delhi school where captain Virat Kohli studied decided to send soil from its premises to "bless" the star batsman at the ICC World Cup 2019 ahead of the Australia game.

With India set to face off against Australia at The Oval in London on Sunday (June 9), host broadcaster Star Sports tweeted a picture of a glass case with soil which is being sent to England.

"The soil from @imVkohli's school, where he learnt to play cricket, is going to London to bless him. Reply with your blessings and wishes and share this post with five other Virat fans as #KingKohli hunts for the #CricketKaCrown. #BlessingsFromHomeGround (sic)," tweeted Star Sports India's official Twitter handle on Friday (June 7).

The soil is from Vishal Bharti Public School, Delhi. After studying in this school, Kohli moved to Saviour Convent for class nine.

Looking at the tweet, Twitter users were confused and replied with memes and gifs. Some questioned as to whose idea was it to send soil to the Indian team to "bless" the skipper.

Kohli, the top-ranked ODI batsman in ICC Rankings, is leading India for the first them at a senior World Cup. Earlier, he had captained the country to Under-19 World Cup glory in 2008 in Malaysia. Kohli was also a part of 2011 World Cup winning squad under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

In the opening match of World Cup 2019, India defeated South Africa by six wickets after Rohit Sharma unbeaten century and Yuzvendra Chahal’s four-wicket haul. Now, a bigger test awaits against the Aaron Finch-captained Australia, who have won both their matches, against Afghanistan and West Indies.

World Cup 2019 features 10 teams and is played on a round robin format. The top four sides qualify for the semi-finals. The final is at the iconic Lord’s stadium on July 14.
