Southampton: South Africa were dealt a huge blow ahead of their match against India as fast bowler Dale Steyn was on Tuesday (June 4) ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2019. Steyn failed to recover from a shoulder injury and he will be replaced in the 15-member squad by left-arm quick Beuran Hendricks, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed.

“Dale Steyn out of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, with Beuran Hendricks to replace him,” tweeted CSA. “Steyn has suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future,” it added.

"Dale's case has been unique," South Africa team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee was quoted as saying in South African media.
"The plan was always to get him ready for second or third game at World Cup, but once he started bowling in the UK he experienced a new discomfort that we call a shoulder impingement," he added.
"The champion bowler that Dale is, every effort was made to allow him to recover and get ready for this tournament," Moosajee said. "Unfortunately this was not to be."

The 35-year-old, who played just two matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL 2019), had flown back from India due to the same injury.
Steyn did not play in South Africa’s opening two matches against England and Bangladesh in the ongoing World Cup. The right-arm bowler has played 93 Tests, 125 ODIs and 44 T20Is.
