Oscars 2020: Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt's Gully Boy to be India’s official entry

Gully Boy, featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, has been announced as India's official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

The movie is the story of a rapper from the slums of Mumbai who dreams of making it to the world of rap/music. In the film, Ranveer and Siddhant play budding street rappers Murad and MC Sher, while Alia essays the role of Safeena, a medical student, who is the love interest of Murad (Ranveer).

 

Farhan Akhtar took to Twitter to share the news. Here are a few movies from different parts of the world that have been nominated for the award. Japan's Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You, South Korea's Parasite. From Iran, Finding Farideh, a documentary film by Kourosh Ataee and Azadeh Moussavi, makes it to the nomination list. Game Of Thrones’ Carice Van Houten starring alongside Marwan Kenzari in Instinct is Netherlands’ official pick this year.

Last year, Village Rockstars was selected as India’s official entry to the 91st Academy Awards. 

Till now, only three films from India have made it till the last round, Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957), Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! (1988), and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan (2001).

 

The 92nd Academy Awards will take place on February 9, 2020 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, US.

The film has received a number of accolades including the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, South Korea; and Best Film at the Indian Festival of Melbourne in August this year.
