Organic Farming Methods  

Mahan Chandra Borah, a farmer from Assam, has been committed to the initiative of preserving indigenous seeds for almost two decades. He aims to establish a seed school which would enable him to impart knowledge to farmers and younger generations about the importance of seed preservation.

In the early 1990s, Sheikh Abdullah, a resident of Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, adopted modern farming methods to increase the production of tomatoes on his land. After he started making profits, he began educating other farmers about his methods. Gradually, a local market was established to facilitate the sales of the increased production. 

Yogesh Baliyan, a farmer from Muzaffarnagar, embarked on his natural farming journey in 2015. He established a mobile food van that runs on solar energy. Today, he earns between Rs 5 to 7 thousand daily. Moreover, he also extends his help to other farmers who express interest in making similar vehicles to establish another source of income.

Rekha Devi, a homemaker from Gopalganj, Bihar, wished to utilize her free time when her kids left home to pursue their goals. She began the cultivation of mushrooms in an unused room at home. Over time, her venture became profitable, and today she earns lakhs of rupees with her endeavours.

Ashwin Nariya has been engaged with organic farming for the past 20 years. He educates other farmers about his farming methods that involves the use of cow urine, cow dung, cow milk, and turmeric in the fields. This approach has proved beneficial as many farmers have been able to increase their production at reduced costs.

Harish began cultivating aloe vera, pomegranate, olive and other crops on 562 acres of land. Currently, he has 20 lakh aloe vera plants on his land. Reportedly, he makes around Rs 2.5 crore annually.  

Santosh Devi Khedar embarked on this journey in 2008 along with her husband. Following organic farming practices, she planted 220 pomegranate trees. The positive outcome of their immense hard work began to manifest in 2011, when the trees bore fruits. A profit of Rs 3,00,000 was made in the first year alone.

Raimati Ghiuria, a young tribal woman hailing from Odisha, is being recognized as the ‘Queen of Millets’ due to her contributions to preserving 30 varieties of rare millets. She also educates people on various aspects of millet cultivation, including techniques for growth, enhancing quality, and preservations.

Gyanesh Tiwari conducted thorough research and received necessary training to open his dairy business. When he encountered a challenge of disposing cow dung, he recognized the potential in utilizing it rather than considering it a waste. In the year 2016, Gyanesh Tiwari received training in vermicomposting, and laid the foundation of his vermicompost production business.

Satyendra Verma is a strawberry farmer from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. In the early stages, he faced challenges in selling the produce and had to educate traders about the benefits of strawberries. Presently, he earns Rs 5 lakh per acre annually.

Rema Devi is a resident of Kottayam, Kerala. She has been growing vegetables and fruits on her terrace for the last 19 years. Presently, she makes Rs 55 thousand in a month from the produce of her terrace garden.

Farmers commonly face challenges such as insect infestations in sugarcane crops, losses caused by stray animals, and delayed payments of their production. Dharmendra Tomar sought a solution to these issues. He introduced a simple and cost-effective solution which involved lemon grass cultivation.

78-year-old Thomas Kattakayam acquired his farming skills from his father who was well skilled in the matters of growing healthy vegetables and fruits. Over the last few years, he has cultivated 400 varieties of jackfruit. With an aim to educate people about sustainable agriculture through his initiatives, he makes Rs 4,00,000 per acre.

Dr Prabhakar Rao worked as an architect for years in Dubai and later did his PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics. His passion to encourage sustainable farming methods among farmers brought him back to India. And now he has revived over 500 seeds of vegetables that were going extinct.
