The Lander Vikram was to soft-land on the far side of the moon at on September 7. Minutes before its scheduled soft-landing, the communication with Vikram Lander was lost. It was 2.1 km above the moon's surface when it lost contact with ground stations.

Chandrayaan 2: Vikram hard landed close to landing site on surface of moon
Chandrayaan 2’s Vikram lander landed within 500 mts of the landing site on the moon’s surface, said the government. The indigenously developed Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft comprising of orbiter, lander and rover was successfully launched on-board the indigenous GSLV MK III-M1 Mission on July 22.

NASA has found no evidence of Chandrayaan 2’s Vikram lander in its flyby of its Moon orbiter. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had attempted a soft landing on September 7 but lost communication with the lander just minutes before the scheduled landing time.

Chandrayaan 2’s Vikram had a hard landing; NASA releases images
Chandrayaan 2’s lander Vikram that was supposed to land on the lunar surface lost contact with ISRO moments before the scheduled landing time. NASA has now released images captured by its Lunar Orbiter Camera that shows that the lander suffered a hard landing.
