The night of December 2nd, 1984, will remain etched in our country’s memory. On that horrific night, deadly methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, claiming over 20,000 lives and leaving lakhs severely disabled. Abdul Jabbar, who was 28 then, lost his mother, father, brother and himself suffered lung fibrosis and lost 50% of his vision. On November 14, 2019, he passed away after fighting for justice for the victims and survivors for close to 3 decades. With the government of India awarding this Bhopal gas tragedy activist the Padma Shri posthumously, let’s take a look at his lesser-known story in this episode of India Untold with Sunita Iyer.

It took the Constituent Assembly more than two years to finalise a draft of our Constitution that would define the Republic status of India. After making over 2000 amendments, the draft was finally concluded on 26 November 1949. Naturally, the Assembly wanted this foundation of law, which represents the diversity in India, to be adorned with artworks. Prem Behari Narain Raizada was approached to embellish the contents of the Constitution with his fine calligraphy. Indian Railways Takes Decisive Step to Cut Down Electricity Bill, Reduce Operating Cost
With the goal of reducing the cost of electricity for traction, Indian Railways has commenced flow of additional 50 MW power (Total 100 MW) from Bhartiya Rail Bijli Company Limited (BRBCL) in the State of Bihar with effect from 28 November 2019, which is expected to lead to an annual saving of Rs. 110 Crores per annum on a recurring basis. The additional flow of 10 MW power from BRBCL has also been started in the State of Rajasthan with effect from 20 November 2019 which is expected to lead to an annual saving of Rs. 11.50 Crores per annum.
