According to a report by The Lancet, fertility rates in India are declining. In 1950, it was 6.2, but it has declined to around 2 in 2021. It can have several impacts on the future of the nation, such as an ageing population, workforce shortage, and economic stress.

The Health and Family Welfare Ministry has proposed the draft amendment to the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements Act, 1954), seeking to introduce a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh for advertisements for drugs, ‘magic remedies’ and other products promoting fair skin, enhancing sexual performance, treating stammering, infertility in women, premature ageing and greying of hair and so on.

The uterus transplantation operation shows that such transplants are feasible and could help thousands of women unable to have children due to uterine problems.
