Royalties in the old times had many nemesis and people trying to depose them off the throne. Kings and queens always had to make sure they were safe and vigilant against assassins trying different techniques to eliminate them. The royals in the Mughal era had the perfect equipment for it: a glass that could detect poison.

This astonishing tumbler is made of cast glass and can reveal if the drink contains poison accurately. This remarkable piece from the Mughal era is kept safe by archaeologists in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh.

According to Dr Subhash Mane, the glass is made of a metal named Kasa. It is around 400 years old and belongs to the Mughal Empire. The metal glass works by changing the colour at the bottom indicating the water inside is poisoned with harmful chemicals. It must have been an essential tool during that period due to its clever way of indentifying poison and saving lives.

It has a posion-detecting element at the bottom which changes colour to red or green if the water has been contaminated. The change in colour works as a signal and alerts the king or queen about a potential assassination attempt.

Like everything else from the Mughal era, this glass is also alluring and elegant. It is not just a position-detecting glass but also a mesmerizing piece of art. It is skilfully carved with images of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz reflecting the exquisite craft and aesthetics of that time period. There are many other beautiful items from the Mughal era that still astonish us to this day.
