Kolkata: In a demonstration against the Mamata Banerjee government for banning the film Bhobishyoter Bhoot, director Anik Dutta gathered a whole lot of personnel from the film fraternity as well as hundreds of cinema buffs and art aficionados in a public park of Kolkata.
The protesters raised slogans against the proscription on screening of the film.
Well-known film, theatre and television personality Jayant Kripalani turned up on the occasion as a mark of solidarity with the filmmaker. He said those who banned the film should go to jail because the Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression.
Bhobishyoter Bhoot is a satire often mistaken for a sequel to the movie Bhooter Bhobishyot. The film has not been banned officially. However, right after its release, the police asked the theatres to pull the film down citing "orders from upper management".
The plot tells a fictitious story inspired by real life where all haunted houses are turned into commercial locations after which the ghosts try to exact revenge. It is suspected that the Bengal government has tacitly asked for a no-show with the belief that the film would be a harsh commentary on cronyism and corruption in the Mamata Banerjee regime, which has allowed awkward 'development' of the state's cities into chaotic markets.
