New Delhi: While you may have enjoyed soulful Qawwali performances in packed auditoriums, the real joy of witnessing this art form, however, lies in the heart of Old Delhi. Touted to be a melodic way to connect with almighty, Qawwali is an energetic musical performance of Sufi poetry that takes place every 'Jumme Ki Raat' or Thursday night in the Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, New Delhi.
The 'khandaani' Qawwals, Nizami Brothers, share how they started on this musical journey as well as the history of the musical form. The brothers belong to a family of vocalists that have been rendering Qawwali for the last 700 years. They are Darbari Aastana singers of Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Aulia in New Delhi.
The present-day Qawwali culture can be tracked down to Sufi saint Amir Khusro, whose shrine is located in this dargah. He is said to be the originator of Qawwali.
