PM Modi files nomination papers from Varanasi

Synopsis

Modi has submitted his application to contest Congress candidate Ajai Rai at the collectorate office. Several BJP leaders were present at the office when Modi filed his nomination. 

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday filed his nomination from the Varanasi parliamentary seat for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Modi has submitted his application at the collectorate office to contest Congress candidate Ajai Rai. 

Several BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj, Sukhbir Singh Badal and Ram Vilas Paswan, were present at the office when Modi filed his nomination. 

Before filing the papers, the Prime Minister offered prayers at Kaal Bhairav Temple in Varanasi.

In 2014, Modi won the seat with more than 5,80,000 votes, defeating both AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and Ajai Rai.

On Thursday, Modi took part in a grand show and the Ganga 'aarti'. The roadshow witnessed showcase of strength by several BJP allies, including Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray and Janata Dal-United's Nitish Kumar. 

Meanwhile, The Congress said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's roadshow in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi was aimed at covering up his failure of fulfilling the promises made to the people there and demanded that he should apologise for "betraying" them.
