Sports minister Kiren Rijiju praises legend Mary Kom for making India proud

New Delhi: Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday (October 10) heaped praise on Indian boxer May Kom after she entered the semi-finals at the ongoing World Women’s Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

"The way Mary Kom has shown her commitment towards the sports after becoming a mother of three children it is a big message to sports," Rijiju told reporters.

"Mary Kom is assured of a medal again, she has already won six world championships titles. She is a legend who has made India proud," he added.

Six-time world champion Mary defeated Rio Olympics bronze medallist Ingrit Valencia of Colombia 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the 51 kg category.

With her entry into semi-finals, Mary is assured of a medal. This is her eighth world championship medal. It is a historic feat which no other Indian has achieved.

After her victory on Thursday, Mary said she will try to win gold for India.

"So after winning the quarter-final, I am happy and will try to win the highest medal for the country. I would try my best and hopefully win the gold medal here. I would give my best to enter the finals of the tournament,” she said.

The Rajya Sabha member has previously won an Olympic bronze medal (2012), five Asian titles, gold medals at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, besides numerous other international top finishes. This year, she won gold medals at the India Open in Guwahati and President's Cup in Indonesia.
