Sindhu carried on with the winning momentum and she wrapped up the second game to record a win in straight games. Sindhu will now face Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand.

In the men's singles, HS Prannoy defeated China's Huang Yu Xiang 21-17, 21-17 to advance to the second round.

Earlier in the day, Saina Nehwal was knocked out of the Hong Kong Open after facing a defeat in the first round. Saina was defeated by China's Cai Yan Yan 13-21, 20-22.

World number nine Saina has had a troubled run in this year as she has now faced an exit from a tournament in the first round five times.

In the men’s singles, Indian shuttler Sameer Verma was knocked out after losing to Taiwan's Wang Tzu Wei 11-21, 21-13, 8-21 in a first round match.
