Siliguri: Another bridge collapses in Bengal, 1 injured

Synopsis

Siliguri: A canal bridge in West Bengal’s Siliguri district collapsed on Friday morning, injuring a truck driver who was rushed to the hospital.

The canal bridge, connecting Rakhalganj and Manganj in Phansidewa, collapsed while a commercial truck was crossing.

This comes three days after the Majerhat flyover collapsed in South Kolkata during peak hours, which claimed three lives and left 27 injured.

The Majerhat flyover was the third to collapse in five years in Kolkata.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Thursday that at least 20 bridges in the city and its suburbs have been found to be unsafe. She also announced a ban on plying of multi-axle trucks with 20 wheels and a suspension of construction of the metro railway in southwest Kolkata.

The Bengal government sat over two warnings on the Majerhat flyover, and ‘fund crunch’ was reportedly cited as a reason to not finance its repair.
