Chennai: Tamil Nadu is all set to get its 33rd district with Kallakurichi as its headquarters. Villupuram district will be bifurcated to give room for the new one.
Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami announced this on Tuesday in the state Assembly. He was answering the motion of thanks to the governor's address.
Based on the requests from various sections, this decision was made, said Palaniswami. An IAS official will be appointed as a special officer, who will administer the district.
Villupuram is currently the largest district in the state consisting of 11 Assembly constituencies and two Lok Sabha constituencies.
Sources say that since Villupuram was large in terms of its area and was posing to be a challenge for the officials to govern, which prompted the chief minister to arrive at this decision.
State law minister and MLA of Ulundurpet, Villupuram district, CV Shanmugam has agreed to the decision. However, reports suggest that some from the current region have expressed their resentment citing distance from their respective places to Kallakurichi.
Four Assembly constituencies and one Parliamentary constituency will be part of the new district, which will be considered as a municipality.
