Diwali special: Tamil Nadu government, following a direction by the Supreme Court on fixing two hours per day to burst crackers, had announced that people can burst firecrackers only between 6 AM to 7 AM and 7 PM to 8 PM.
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police have taken the implementation of Supreme Court order on fixed time for bursting firecrackers seriously and have booked 700 people for violating the rules.
The Tamil Nadu government had announced on November 2 that people can burst crackers only between 6 AM to 7 AM and 7 PM to 8 PM from November 5 to 8. The rules were announced following the October 23 direction of the Supreme Court in this regard.
Thus, cops were keeping an eye on people who were trying to burst crackers before 6 AM, after 7AM or before 7 PM and after 8 PM. Accordingly, 622 cases have been filed against 700 people, who violated the set rules.
According to reports, cases have been filed against 80 people in Villupuram, 40 in Virudhanagar, 30 in Coimbatore, 20 in Dindigul, 11 in Madurai, 10 in Cuddalore, six in Tirunelveli, two in Chennai and one each at Namakkal and Nagarcoil.
Cases have been filed under Sections 291 and 268 (creating nuisance), section 188 (not following the rules set by public servant) of the IPC.
Though cases were filed against hundreds of people, most were let out on bail, shortly.
