Nation shows Rahul Gandhi the mirror on FoE after Bhandarkar attacked him on his tweet claiming to support FoE

On Saturday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter and broke his silence over the complaints, which sought the removal of certain scenes from Sacred Games on the grounds of insulting and tarnishing the image of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. He said that he believes in freedom of expression.

BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right.

My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that.

— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi)

Bollywood director Madhur Bhandarkar called out Rahul's hypocrisy and double standards as the Congress president had failed to help him during protests over his film Indu Sarkar in 2017. Bhandarkar tweeted a video of alleged Congress workers staging protests and threatening him ahead of the release of his film, which was based on the Emergency. Bhandarkar added that he had sought Rahul’s support but the Congress president had ignored his plea.

Dear ji here is a compilation of the harrowing experience I had when ur party workers tried to police & control my FOE during my film I was hounded at various cities to 5 star hotel to the censor board office. I requested 4 ur support but u didn't. pic.twitter.com/1y93DgVOXm

Earlier, a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday demanding to censor Netflix’s Sacred Games, claiming that its content was derogatory and insulting to Rajiv Gandhi. In Bengal too, a complaint was filed by a Congress activist against actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Netflix and the makers of Sacred Games.

The series is directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane and is based on author Vikram Chandra’s novel by the same name.

That’s a yay ... https://t.co/umv05MLJXc

While the director of the series rooted for Rahul, many are mocking him for his tweet.

Freedom of Expression under from the time joined active politics (2004).

A man SO POWERFUL he could demand from his own govt the tearing up of its own Ordinance; a man who could have intervened in EACH of these instances but didn't. https://t.co/rZfQgiO8Sh
