A baby girl was born at the Kalpana Chawla Hospital in Haryana's Karnal district, two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, under Ayushman Bharat scheme. All of 3 kg, baby Karishma does not know yet that she is on her way to becoming a celebrity.

Born on August 17, Karishma and her family members are completely unaware of the fact that she is now a national celebrity. Karishma's father Amit Kumar became the first beneficiary of the PMJAY scheme when the hospital was reimbursed Rs 9,000 for Karishma's birth through caesarean section.

Haryana started PMJAY pilots in 26 hospitals in the State the same day that PM Modi announced them in his Independence Day speech. Hours later, Mousami, the wife of Amit Kumar, a labourer from Sarpuria village of Karnal, was admitted to the Kalpana Chawla hospital for delivery. Two days later, Karishma was born.

Ayushman Bharat, also pointed to as 'Modicare', is the national healthcare policy launched by the Government of India in February this year. The ambitious health care policy promises to cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families by providing a cover up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.

Benefits of this scheme are portable across the country and a beneficiary covered under the plan will be allowed to take cashless benefits from any public or private empanelled dispensaries across the country. The project is entitlement based, with the eligibility determined on the basis of deprivation measures in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) database. The recipients can avail the facilities in both public as well as empanelled private healthcare centres.
