Shirdi: Attacking the opposition for not launching pro-people schemes during its tenure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said most schemes and programmes were launched to ‘publicise just one family’ rather helping the poor.

Modi is in Shirdi for a one-day visit to observe the death centenary of Sai Baba in Shirdi. He addressed a rally where he interacted with Prime Minister Awas Yojana- Grameen (PMJAY) beneficiaries in Maharashtra.

“Earlier efforts were made but their efforts were made to publicise one family, they were just catering to a vote bank. They did not think about getting an electricity connection, a toilet for your home, a gas connection or to ensure that a good quality home is built for you,” said Modi, without naming the Gandhi family.

He added that the country under NDA government has made remarkable progress. He said his government was successful in building 1.25 crore houses in four years, while the UPA government managed only 25 lakh houses during its term.

“If the same government (Congress) would have been in power then it would have taken them 20 more years to build as many houses as we have built. Which means the poor would have to wait for 20 more years to live in a good house,” he said.

He also promised that the state would get the Centre’s help to counter the drought in Marathwada and North Maharashtra regions.
