Varanasi: Caught 16 years ago with suspicious documents, Pakistani national Jalaluddin got released from Varanasi Central Jail, and returned home with a copy of Bhagavadgita.
Jalaluddin from Sindh province in Pakistan was found in possession of suspicious documents including maps of the Cantonment area and other important places nearby in 2001. He was arrested near the Air Force office.
He was booked under Official Secrets Act and Foreigner's Act and after 16 years of imprisonment, he chose to walk away with the copy of Bhagavadgita.
Speaking to media, senior superintendent of Varanasi Central Jail, Ambrish Gaud said, "When he was arrested, he had graduated from high school. He completed his intermediate and did his MA from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He also undertook an electrician course as well in the jail. He had been an umpire in the jail cricket league for the last three years."
Jalaluddin was accompanied by a special team to Amritsar. He was handed over to Pakistani authorities at the Wagah-Attari border.
