New Delhi: Former chief minister of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh ND Tiwari passed away on his 93rd birthday on Thursday.

Tiwari died at a city hospital after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife Ujjwala Sharma and son Rohit Shekhar.

Tiwari was admitted to the Max Super Speciality Hospital and died at 2.50 pm, the doctors said. The politician was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital on October 16. He was suffering from fever and pneumonia.

Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat paid tributes to Tiwari and said he was deeply sorrowed by the loss of the veteran Congress leader.

"Tiwariji's contribution to Uttarakhand can never be forgotten. He played a key role in giving pace to the financial and industrial development of the newly formed Uttarakhand, and helped the state to stand up on its feet," Rawat tweeted.

Tiwari, born on October 18, 1925, was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for three times. He was the first elected chief minister of Uttarakhand. He also served as a Union minister in several Congress governments and as the Andhra Pradesh governor. In 2009, he resigned as Andhra Pradesh governor for his alleged involvement in a sex scandal.

He was admitted to Max Hospital on September 20 last year after suffering a brain stroke.
