New Delhi: Social networking website Facebook on Thursday said that it will send a voter registration reminder to Indian users who are eligible to vote.

According to an official statement by the company, Facebook’s ‘Register Now’ button is designed to encourage citizens of the nation to register themselves with the Election Commission of India.

The notification will be rolled out in 13 Indian languages – English, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali, Urdu, Assamese, Marathi and Oriya.

Shivnath Thukral, Public Policy Director for India and South Asia said, “As part of our efforts, on National Voters Day on January 25, a voter registration reminder will appear at the top of the News Feed as a reminder service for all the voters.”

People will be directed to the National Voters’ Services Portal when they click on the Register Now button, and they would be guided through the registration process.
Facebook has over 200 million users in India and had partnered with the Election Commission in 2017 for a similar initiative.

The EC will observe National Voters’ Day in Delhi and across other six lakh locations that cover over 10-lakh polling stations.
