Dhaka: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina that people excluded from the NRC in Assam would not be deported to the country, said a top Bangladeshi official on Friday.

"Indian Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi personally assured our premier that those who were excluded from the list under the NRC exercise will not be sent to Bangladesh," said HT Imam, Political Adviser to Hasina.

Imam further said that India has repeatedly assured Bangladesh that no deportation, which can trigger create any sort of political instability, will take place.

Bangladesh, currently, is gearing up for national elections later this year .

The NRC contains names of Indian citizens of Assam and the list was prepared in 1951. The state restarted the exercise after the BJP government came to power in the state led by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal who was formerly associated with the All Assam Students Union that had been leading a movement for decades to ensure that bona fide Assamese alone live in the state.

Aiming to flush out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, several states like Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Nagaland and Tripura, are considering an Assam-like register of citizens with the help of the Centre.
