Guwahati: On the eve of the nation’s 70th Republic Day, President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna to music maestro and cultural icon Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “The songs and music of Bhupen Hazarika are admired by people across generations. From them radiates the message of justice, harmony and brotherhood. He popularised India's musical traditions globally. Happy that Bharat Ratna has been conferred on Bhupen Da.”

BJP president Amit Shah said in his tweet – “Bhupen Hazarika ji, popularly known as Sudhakantha has made significant contribution to Indian music and film industry. His music was full of empathy and his art held out a strong message for humanity and universal brotherhood.”

Samar Hazarika, brother of the legendary musician, who lived at Nizarapar area in Guwahati said that he is extremely delighted that the son of the soil, Dr Bhupen Hazarika has been conferred the Bharat Ratna.
“We are grateful to the Indian government and Assam government. Various organisations of Assam demanded that Bhupen Da should be conferred the Bharat Ratna and the Indian government has finally awarded. If Bhupen da still alive, he would very happy to hear it,” Samar Hazarika said.
Born on September 8, 1926 in Sadiya, Bhupen Hazarika is widely known as Sudhakantha.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee has also been conferred the Bharat Ratna. Social activist Nanaji Deshmukh was conferred the highest civilian award of India posthumously, as well.
