Kannur: A tragedy deprived a woman of her husband. But with the help of science, she was able to conceive his children long after his death. Shilna was devastated after her husband Sudhakaran died due to a road accident. With her husband gone, she never thought his biological children would ever be born. But it all became true thanks to her prayers and the brilliance of science.
A year after writer and teacher Sudhakaran's death in a road accident, his twin babies were born to his wife Shilna. This was made possible through In vitro fertilisation (IVF).
The couple had started treatment to tackle infertility four years ago. On August 15 last year, Sudhakaran met with an accident while he was travelling from Nilambur to Kozhikode after a teacher's camp. He was hit by a lorry and he died on the spot.
Shilna, however, expressed her desire to her family and doctors to have Sudhakaran's children. Though the couple had tried IVF in 2016 and 2017, it was not successful. Shilina to give it another chance.
Following this, she got admitted to Kozhikode ARMC treatment centre, where her husband's sperm was preserved. Through IVF, the sperm was injected into her uterus. Shilina gave birth to the twins on September 13, 2018. The caesarean was performed by Kannur Koyili Hospital's Dr Amar Ramachandran and his team.
The two baby girls weigh 2.3 kgs and 2.5 kgs each.
