India has the world’s biggest “voluntary" army and its soldiers are considered the best in high altitude and mountain warfare.

The Army recently made headlines with its long-pending project to manufacture equipment for soldiers deployed at the Siachen glacier. Military sources said that the Army is aiming to save around Rs 300 crores annually by producing clothing, sleeping kits and key equipment for these soldiers indigenously. Till now the Army spends Rs 800 crores annually in import of Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS) from countries like US, Australia, Canada and Switzerland.
