Fake Instagram profile in Karnataka IGP Roopa's name to scam people; case filed

On December 28, inspector-general of police (IGP) Roopa Moudgil was shocked to receive a tweet by a user named Suresh Hosamani, who accused her of collecting fraudulent donations without providing required details.

IPS officer Roopa later realised that a fake Instagram page was created in her name, which included her photos and also had a post seeking donations for “destitute women”.

After seeing this activity on Instagram, she later posted a tweet, which said, “This is not my account. I'm not on Instagram. This is brought to my notice only now. Will complain to the cyber crime police station @CIDKarnataka. Meanwhile request those on @instagram to report this issue.”

Talking to reporters, IGP Roopa said that she does not have an Instagram account and that the photos of her on the fake account were taken from her Facebook profile.

Later, Roopa filed a complaint with the cyber crime police. In her complaint, the officer requested the cops to track the miscreants and has also asked them to inform Instagram authorities, where they could take down the profile.

A case has been registered under sections 420, 419 of the IPC and sections 66(c) and 66(d) of the Information Technology Act.
