Delhi Police: 33,000 people caught for drunken driving, 27% more than last year

Delhi Police recently revealed that 33,000 people have been caught for drinking and driving this year (till October) in the national capital.

However, what is more shocking than the staggering numbers is that there has been 27% rise in such incidents from 2017.

Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Delhi said that drunken driving cases generally rise during winter when festivals begin.

"As the trend of drunken driving is higher during this time, we have intensified surveillance on roads connected to marketplaces which have nightclubs, bars and restaurants nearby," Kumar said, according to India Today.

While the senior cops said that awareness among youngsters and their parents is the way to go to minimise accident, barricades have been put on stretches such as Aurobindo Marg, August Kranti Marg, Inner circle of Connaught Place, Vasant Vihar and Vasant Kunj roads — places where over 500 commercial establishments are there where alcoholic beverages are served.

Recently,  a 38-year-old mother was crushed to death by a car driven by a 22-year-old heavily drunk woman. The accident also left her teen daughter heavily injured. Both the victims were inside their Mahindra Quanto when it was rammed by a Maruti S-Cross.
