Chhattisgarh: After peaceful Assembly elections, nation tastes big success against naxals

Synopsis

Police have recovered eight bodies of the slain naxals from the spot and identified the two deceased policemen as personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG)

Raipur: As many as eight naxals were killed and two police personnel martyred during an encounter on Monday in insurgency-hit Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

According to the police, the encounter took place in a forest that falls within the jurisdiction of the Kistaram police station.

The police recovered the bodies of the eight slain naxals from the spot of the encounter and identified the two policemen killed as personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) — a locally-raised force fighting the Maoists.

A senior police officer said that when the news of the encounter was received, additional forces were deployed.

Chhattisgarh had recently held Assembly elections, which were largely peaceful, despite a constant naxal threat. The elections had seen 70% voter turnout.
