Congress president Rahul Gandhi urged the Prime Minister to bring petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST

New Delhi: A day after the Narendra Modi government announced a Rs 2.5 cut in overall fuel prices, leaders of opposition parties took to microblogging website Twitter to voice their reactions.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi urged the Prime Minister to bring petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST.

Gandhi tweeted, “Respected Modiji, the common people are troubled with skyrocketing prices of diesel and petrol. Please bring petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST."

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal also took to Twitter to write, “The Modi government increased excise duty (on fuel) by Rs 10 per litre but reduced by just Rs 2.50 per litre. This is cheating. The Central government must reduce at least Rs 10 per litre”.

https://t.co/WqBzarLLaD

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury tweeted, “Since 2014, when Modi came to power, he has increased taxes on petrol by Rs 12 and on diesel by Rs 14. Yesterday's cut is only Rs 1.50. If taxes at pre-2014 levels, petrol will be Rs 70/ litre. Charade, PR and trying to fool us all, amidst the economic disaster they have created”.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said, "The government's lies over no control over petrol and diesel prices has come out today (October 4). The profiteering BJP-government has been exploiting the common man by using their formula of 'increasing Rs 25, decreasing Rs 2.50'. Due to upcoming elections, they (BJP-government) are giving the impression as if they are trying to reduce the prices, now even the BJP supporters are feeling cheated."
