Today, let’s explore alternative ways that can allow you to become a teacher in India without the need for a BEd degree.

In India, it is essential to possess a BEd degree to pursue a career as a school teacher. This degree allows aspiring teachers to learn about the Indian education system and various effective teaching methods. However, if you’re wondering whether there are any other ways to pursue teaching without having a BEd degree, you’ve come to the right place. For students, who don’t possess this qualification, other alternative ways are also available. Let’s explore these options.

1. Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)

ITEP is a specialized teacher training programme designed for people who wish to pursue teaching as a career. ITEP integrates teacher training with the undergraduate curriculum, allowing students to acquire teaching skills and qualifications alongside their chosen academic field.

ITEP is a 4-year programme that can be pursued immediately after class 12. The admission to ITEP is done through entrance exams and exam rankings. Counselling sessions are also conducted for admission. Depending on the performance in the entrance exam, students can opt for integrated programmes such as BSc BEd, BA BEd, or BCom BEd.

It’s important to note that this programme will only allow you to become a primary teacher in India without the need for a BEd degree. For teaching elementary and higher secondary classes, you will need to pursue BEd.

2. PGT without BEd

PGT stands for Post Graduate Teacher. To become a post graduate teacher in India, you will need to possess a postgraduate degree in the subject you wish to teach in. Typically, DSSSB requires aspiring teachers to obtain a BEd degree to become teachers in Delhi government schools. However, there’s also a condition which can allow you to become a teacher without BEd.

The condition states that you must possess senior secondary education certificate, graduate degree, and postgraduate degree with at least 60 percent marks in all the three qualifications. If you’ve been an outstanding student, this can be a lucrative path you can pursue. Furthermore, if you clear the DSSSB PGT exams, you will need to obtain BEd degree within three years of joining. So, all the best!

3. Teaching in private institutions

To become a government school teacher, BEd is the essential requirement. However, several private institutions and schools in India will hire you as a teacher if you are dedicated towards teaching. Apply for the posts in private institutes whenever you see any vacancies. This will help you gain significant experience as a teacher.
