Son of a taxi driver clears UPSC exam in his third attempt with no coaching

Shivam, a resident of Rewari, Haryana, secured 457th rank in UPSC CSE 2023 exams. His father, Hardayal works as a taxi driver. Fighting against all the odds, he conquered the prestigious UPSC exam on his third attempt, and that too without attending any coaching classes.  

Education

Shivam lives in Gulabi Bagh with his family. His mother shares that he showed academic prowess from an early age. Despite the difficult financial circumstances at home, he diligently devoted his time to studies. Shivam completed his schooling from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. He nurtured a dream of studying at IIT and made it happen with the help of coaching from a local institute in Rewari. He earned a civil engineering degree from IIT Guwahati. 

UPSC journey

After completing his engineering degree, Shivam began his UPSC preparations while living in Delhi. He chose not to enrol in coaching classes. He has two sisters, Pooja, who is married, and Sanju, who works as a lecturer in Kendriya Vidyalaya in Assam. Shivam’s mother holds a postgraduate degree while his father is a class 10 pass out. 

Dedication

Shivam’s mother gives tuition classes to young children at home. He believes that effective time management is crucial for achieving goals. During his UPSC journey, he diligently studied for 10 to 12 hours daily to pursue his dreams. His father, Hardayal expresses joy over his achievements. Shivam's success has brought immense pride to all his family members.
