The ingenuity of Pranav Suman cannot be expressed in words. At the age of 15 he has made the impossible happen. He invented an inverter which can be charged using solar power. He experienced failure 16 times but continued to complete his project. His excellent feats have earned him a chance to represent India in the USA’s next year competitions.

Patna: In order to relieve his family from the unbearable sweltering heat of the summer, Patna’s 15-year-old Pranav Suman invented an inverter for his house. The shortage of power is a constant and almost an unending problem in his neighbourhood. Pranav’s family is not well off to afford an inverter, so he took it upon himself to build a model himself.

Pranav’s final model of the inverter took a lot of his patience. He failed almost 16 times while completing his project. His determination was of such degrees that not even once did he lose the courage to start his project all over again 16 times.

Preventing short circuits

Pranav is still a school student and is enrolled in SDM International Public School. His extraordinary feat would make people wonder about his age; but he is only a 15-year-old teenager. His inverter has all the essential features of a typical modern inverter with some additional qualities.

There are options for power indication, short circuit indication and it gives a backup for up to 3 hours. All the essential home appliances can run smoothly with Pranav’s inverter. It also automatically turns off power in case of a short circuit.

Small sized batteries

Pranav shares that he implemented the technology that is used in Tesla cars, that uses a DC-to-DC booster module in order to increase the efficiency of the inverter from 300 to 1100. His inverter is called Indus 1100 Smart Inverter. Unlike other typical inverters, the batteries used in Pranav’s model are of much smaller size.

Modern inverters use heavier external batteries, but Pranav has made use of book sized batteries. They are more convenient to carry and do not occupy much space. Its efficiency is based on a Lithium-Ion dry cell, which is extremely light and cheap.

Solar charging

Pranav had started doing his project one and a half years ago, he failed several times but did not give up. His only motivation was to provide comfort to his family from the heat. The final model was ready after his 17th attempt at the project. He had spent Rs 4000 in the making of his inverter and now he sells it for Rs 6000 in the market.

Pranav’s inverter has two charging methods, one by direct 200-volt AC supply at home and the other by solar power charging.

Representing India in America

Pranav shares another story, one day when he was returning back home from school, he saw coconuts lying in the dumping area, and the idea occurred to him that would happen if uses coconuts’ fibres to prepare soil.

He implemented the idea and found that the soil formed from coconuts’ fibres helps grow plants 4 times faster than the normal soil. He used this homemade soil to grow paddy plants.

Pranav has always received outstanding grades in his school, he has many aspirations and dreams to accomplish. He recently participated in National Children’s Science Congress Competition and received extraordinary grades for his project. Through this competition, he has received an opportunity to go to the USA next year to represent India in the next level competitions.
