With 2 more vaccines in the offing, India might inoculate those above 50 years

Synopsis

In the coming days, India will be expanding the eligibility criteria for inoculating its people. It will include those above 50 years

Bengaluru: In what will indeed be a boost to the inoculation drive being conducted by India, the Union government is mulling expanding the eligibility criteria.

The expansion will include those above 50 years in the coming months, reports Times of India.

The website quoted director of AIIMS Delhi Randeep Guleria, who is a member of the national Covid task force instituted by the government to formulate strategy to fight against the pandemic, as saying that the drive could be expanded within the next three months to include people who are 50 years and above in age.

It is to be noted that the observations by Guleria came the same day when Union health minister Harsh Vardhan told the Lok Sabha that the groups being inoculated will be expanded in the coming days because the infection and the scientific community's response to it are dynamic.

It is to be noted that two more vaccines - one developed by Zydus Cadila and another by Russia (Sputnik V) - could get an emergency use authorisation as they have required data, the website notes.

He also shared that Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute of India (SII) have also been asked to ramp up the production of Covaxin and Covishield vaccines.
