Agra: A UP Roadways bus carrying more than 40 passengers plunged into a drain on Yamuna Expressway, killing 29 people and leaving others severely injured near Agra.

The accident occurred on Monday morning when a double-decker bus carrying more than 40 passengers that was travelling from Lucknow to New Delhi fell into the drain after the driver lost control of the vehicle. Reports claim that the driver fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle when it veered off the road and plummeted into a 50-feet deep drain.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief and condolences at the death of the passengers and directed DM SSP to provide all possible medical attention to the injured, an ANI reported stated.

UP Roadways has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the family of the deceased.

"One Sleeper Coach passenger bus travelling from Lucknow to Delhi met with an accident on Yamuna Expressway. It fell into the side fall about 15 feet deep. 20 passengers rescued so far. Efforts are on for the rest," tweeted the UP Police.
