Bengaluru: When adversities present themselves, it is a knack that a certain few convert them into opportunities to make the society a better place to live in.

34-year-old Janki Chand, hailing from Uttarakhand, falls in this category.

Unfortunately, she is afflicted by polio.

It was only when she was 13 that she began to move around on her limbs.

“I was able to go to school only after that. My mother feared for my future and I worked hard to catch up with other children who were way ahead of me. My sister and mother helped me with my study,” adds The New Indian Express.

But the disease has not deterred her from carrying out inspirational activities.

She is an anganwadi worker who has also taken up teaching the underprivileged kids.

Talking of teaching, she teaches underprivileged kids who can’t afford education in private schools. With her phenomenal work, she has made a name for herself in ‘Banbasa Basti Meena Bazar’ an area comprising 3,500 people.

She says, “It was in 2006 when I first visited the colony. Most children there were delinquents and wasted their time in useless activities. I took a year before I could understand a little bit about the situation. I spoke to the youths and encouraged them to focus on productive work,” as quoted by the website.

Such is her commitment for helping the cause of the downtrodden that she says she can’t sit quietly looking at the plight of the younger people.

She says, “A little support can change lives if provided at the right time. I cannot remain neutral and go on with my life seeing others around me suffer and struggle.”

She has also won the President’s Medal in 2011 for her exemplary work in the country’s census work.

It is people like her who make us happy and leave us in awe.
