Tripura requests CBI probe into Rose Valley Group chit fund scam

Agartala: While the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC regime in Bengal is fuming over Union home ministry’s “serious concerns” over the deteriorating law and order in the state, the BJP government in Tripura has dealt another blow.

In a letter to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the chief secretary of Tripura has requested that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) be charged with investigating the 74 cases of chit fund scams, including the one by the Rose Valley Group that was primarily an extension of its misdoings in West Bengal, be expedited.

There are three cases of fraud by the Rose Valley Group in Tripura — one each in Agartala, Kumarghat and Birganj. The combined amount that the Rose Valley Group has been alleged to have embezzled is just under Rs100 crore.

“I am directed to request you to kindly expedite the process for taking up of investigation in respect of all the 74 cases against the chit fund companies as referred by the State government, including 3 cases pending against Rose Valley Group of Companies. The three cases against Rose Valley Group may be taken up on priority,” Tripura chief secretary Arup Deb wrote to the DoPT.

The Home Department of Tripura had consented through two letters to the DoPT, dated July 13, 2018, and April 19, 2018, for investigation by CBI in respect of the total 74 cases against Non-Banking Financial Institutions (NBFCs).

The letter was also sent to the director of the CBI and the joint director of CBI’s zonal office in Guwahati.
